Spanish grammar

Something, nothing, somebody, nobody

A1 · Beginner Saying no Questions 10

The rule

Pairs: algo / nada for things, alguien / nadie for people, algún / ningún before a noun. The rule that surprises everybody: when the negative word comes AFTER the verb, Spanish keeps the no as well. No he comido nada, no ha venido nadie. That is not a double negative in Spanish — it is required. If the negative word comes first, the no disappears: nadie ha venido.

Pattern

no + verbo + nada / nadie · nada / nadie + verbo

Examples

  1. No he comido nada desde el desayuno.

I have not eaten anything since breakfast.

  2. No ha venido nadie a la reunión.

    Nobody came to the meeting.

  3. ¿Necesita algo más?

    Do you need anything else?

Keep in mind

  • No ha venido nadie. / Nadie ha venido.

Both correct; the no goes only when nadie follows the verb.
