ser and estar: quality and state

The rule

A0 split them as identity versus location. A1 needs the other axis, because it changes the MEANING of the adjective. ser describes what something IS like, permanently; estar describes the state it is IN right now, including the result of something that happened. Es aburrido means he is a boring person; está aburrido means he is bored. Es guapo is a permanent quality; está guapo is "he is looking good today". And a result always takes estar: la ventana está rota.

Pattern

ser + cualidad permanente · estar + estado o resultado

Examples

  1. Mi jefe es muy serio, pero hoy está contento.

    My boss is very serious, but today he is happy.

  2. La ventana está rota desde el lunes.

    The window has been broken since Monday.

  3. El gazpacho es frío; hoy está riquísimo.

    Gazpacho is a cold dish; today it is delicious.

Keep in mind

  • Es aburrido. / Está aburrido.

    He is boring. / He is bored. Two different sentences.
