muy and mucho

The rule

The single most frequent small mistake at this level. muy goes in front of an adjective or an adverb and NEVER changes: muy caro, muy despacio. mucho goes with a noun or after a verb, and with a noun it AGREES: mucho trabajo, mucha gente, muchos años, muchas veces. You can never say muy mucho, and mucho caro is wrong.

Pattern

muy + adjetivo / adverbio · mucho / mucha / muchos / muchas + sustantivo · verbo + mucho

Examples

  1. El piso es muy caro.

    The flat is very expensive.

  2. Hay mucha gente en la cola.

    There are a lot of people in the queue.

  3. Trabajo mucho los fines de semana.

    I work a lot at weekends.
