Spanish grammar

Direct object pronouns

A1 · Beginner Referring to people and things Questions 10

The rule

Once a thing has been named, Spanish does not name it again — it replaces it with lo, la, los, las, agreeing with the noun. ¿El informe? Ya lo he mandado. ¿Las llaves? Las tengo yo. The pronoun goes in front of the conjugated verb, and lo also works as a neutral "it" for a whole idea: no lo sé.

Pattern

el libro → lo · la carta → la · los papeles → los · las llaves → las

Examples

  1. ¿El informe? Ya lo he mandado.

The report? I have already sent it.

  2. ¿Las llaves? Las tengo yo.

    The keys? I have them.

  3. No lo sé, lo siento.

    I do not know, sorry.

Keep in mind

  • Lo he mandado. / He mandado lo.

The pronoun goes before the verb, never after a conjugated one.
