The rule

Ordinals to tenth are worth knowing because floors, courses and forms all use them: primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo. They agree like adjectives, and primero and tercero drop the -o before a masculine noun: el primer piso, el tercer día. For dates Spanish uses the ORDINARY number with de: el tres de marzo, el veinte de abril — only the first of the month may be el uno or el primero.

Pattern

primero → primer + sustantivo masculino · el + número + de + mes

Examples

  1. Vivo en el tercer piso.

    I live on the third floor.

  2. La reunión es el tres de marzo.

    The meeting is on the third of March.

  3. Es la segunda vez que llamo.

    It is the second time I have called.

Keep in mind

  • el primer piso / la primera planta

    primer before a masculine noun, primera before a feminine one.
