estar + gerund

The rule

For an action happening right now, or across a stretch of time you are inside. Conjugate estar and add the gerund: -ar verbs give -ando, -er and -ir verbs give -iendo. Estoy trabajando, están comiendo. A few are irregular: leer → leyendo, dormir → durmiendo, decir → diciendo, pedir → pidiendo. Unlike English, Spanish does NOT use this for the future: for tomorrow you say mañana trabajo or voy a trabajar, never estoy trabajando mañana.

Pattern

estoy / estás / está / estamos / están + -ando, -iendo

Examples

  1. Ahora estoy trabajando, te llamo luego.

    I am working right now, I will call you later.

  2. Los niños están durmiendo.

    The children are sleeping.

  3. Estoy aprendiendo español desde enero.

    I have been learning Spanish since January.

Keep in mind

  • Mañana trabajo.

    Not "estoy trabajando mañana" — Spanish does not use the gerund for plans.
