Spanish grammar

Passing on a message: dice que, pregunta si

A2 · Elementary Asking questions Questions 10

The rule

To pass on a message, use decir que + what was said: dice que llega tarde. The person changes, as in English: "Estoy cansada" → dice que está cansada. If it has just been said, keep the tense: me ha dicho que viene mañana. For a yes/no question use preguntar si: "¿Vienes?" → pregunta si vienes. For a question with a question word, keep the word AND its accent: "¿Dónde vives?" → pregunta dónde vives. Do not leave out the que after dice — English can drop "that", Spanish cannot.

Pattern

dice que + frase · pregunta si + frase · pregunta dónde / cuándo / qué + frase
