Spanish grammar

Exclamations: ¡qué…!, ¡cuánto…!, ¡cómo…!

A2 · Elementary Asking questions Questions 10

The rule

Spanish exclaims with the question words, and they keep their accent: ¡Qué bonito!, ¡Qué frío hace!, ¡Qué suerte!. With a noun AND an adjective, add tan or más between them: ¡Qué piso más bonito!, ¡Qué día tan largo!. ¡Cuánto + noun! agrees with the noun: ¡Cuánta gente!, ¡Cuántos coches!. ¡Cómo + verb! exclaims about the way or the amount: ¡Cómo llueve!, ¡Cómo ha crecido tu hija!. Remember the opening ¡.

Pattern

¡Qué + adj./sust.! · ¡Qué + sust. + tan/más + adj.! · ¡Cuánto/a/os/as + sust.! · ¡Cómo + verbo!

Examples

  1. ¡Qué casa tan bonita tienes!

What a lovely house you have!

  2. ¡Cuánta gente hay en la playa!

How many people there are on the beach!

  3. ¡Cómo ha crecido tu hija!

Keep in mind

  • ¡Qué frío! / ¡Cuánto frío!

Both work: qué for the quality, cuánto for the amount — and cuánto agrees: ¡cuánta gente!
