mío, tuyo, suyo: the long possessives
The rule
A0 taught mi, tu, su in front of the noun. Spanish also has a long form that goes AFTER the noun or stands alone: mío, tuyo, suyo, nuestro, suyo — agreeing with the thing owned. After ser: esta maleta es mía. Instead of the noun, with an article: mi coche es rojo; el tuyo es azul. After the noun: un amigo mío ("a friend of mine"). Note the spelling: mi has no accent, mío does.
es mío / mía · el tuyo, la suya · un amigo mío
Examples
¿Este paraguas es tuyo?
Is this umbrella yours?
Mi casa es pequeña; la suya es enorme.
My house is small; hers is huge.

Keep in mind
Es mi libro. / El libro es mío.
Before the noun: mi; after ser or alone: mío.
