esto, eso, aquello, and lo + adjective

The rule

When you point at something you cannot name — or at an idea, a situation, a whole sentence — Spanish uses the neuter forms esto, eso, aquello. They never change and never go before a noun: ¿qué es esto?, eso no es verdad, aquello fue increíble. With a noun, use este, ese, aquel. In the same family, lo + a masculine adjective means "the … thing": lo bueno, lo malo, lo mejor, lo importante es…. Lo mejor del barrio es el parque = "the best thing about the neighbourhood is the park".

Examples

  1. ¿Qué es esto? Nunca lo he visto.

    What's this? I've never seen it.

  2. Eso que dices no es verdad.

    What you're saying isn't true.

  3. Lo mejor de mi trabajo son los compañeros.

    The best thing about my job is my colleagues.

Keep in mind

  • Este coche es mío. / Esto es mío.

    este goes with a noun; esto stands alone for something you do not name.
