De regel

unless betekent if not en bevat de ontkenning al, dus blijft het werkwoord erna bevestigend: I will not go unless you come. as long as en provided that stellen een voorwaarde die u aanvaardt: You can borrow it as long as you bring it back. in case is anders — het is geen voorwaarde maar een voorzorg VOORAF: Take an umbrella in case it rains betekent neem hem nu mee, of het nu regent of niet. Alle drie houden de tegenwoordige tijd als de betekenis toekomstig is.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: I will not go unless you do not come.

    Goed: I will not go unless you come.

    unless is al ontkennend; een tweede ontkenning draait de betekenis om.

  • Fout: Take a coat in case it will rain.

    Goed: Take a coat in case it rains.

    Na in case blijft het werkwoord in de tegenwoordige tijd.

  • Fout: I took an umbrella in case of it rained.

    Goed: I took an umbrella in case it rained.

    Na in case komt een zin; na in case of een zelfstandig naamwoord.
