القاعدة

unless تعني if not وتحمل النفي في ذاتها، فيبقى الفعل بعدها مثبتًا: ‏I will not go unless you come. وas long as وprovided that تضعان شرطًا تقبله: ‏You can borrow it as long as you bring it back. أما in case فمختلفة: ليست شرطًا بل احتياطًا يُتّخذ مسبقًا: ‏Take an umbrella in case it rains تعني خذها الآن سواء أمطرت أم لا. وكلها تبقى في المضارع حين يكون المعنى مستقبليًا.

unless = if not · as long as / provided that + present · in case = as a precaution

أمثلة

  1. I will not sign unless I understand it.

    لن أوقّع ما لم أفهمها.

  2. You can stay as long as you are quiet.

    يمكنك البقاء ما دمت هادئًا.

  3. Take my number in case you get lost.

    خذ رقمي تحسّبًا لأن تضلّ الطريق.

  4. Unless the train is late, we will be there by six.

    ما لم يتأخر القطار سنصل قبل السادسة.

أخطاء شائعة

  • خطأ: I will not go unless you do not come.

    صحيح: I will not go unless you come.

    unless منفية أصلًا، ونفي ثانٍ يقلب المعنى.

  • خطأ: Take a coat in case it will rain.

    صحيح: Take a coat in case it rains.

    بعد in case يبقى الفعل في المضارع.

  • خطأ: I took an umbrella in case of it rained.

    صحيح: I took an umbrella in case it rained.

    بعد in case تأتي جملة، وبعد in case of يأتي اسم.
