De regel

’s is gewoon bij personen, dieren, organisaties, plaatsen en tijd (the company’s profits, a week’s holiday). of is gebruikelijk bij dingen en abstracties (the end of the film) en bij lange bezitters. De dubbele genitief a friend of mine = een van mijn vrienden. Tom and Anna’s house is één gedeeld huis; my mother’s and my father’s cars zijn aparte auto’s. ten minutes’ walk of a ten-minute walk — in de samenstelling blijft het enkelvoud. at the dentist’s = bij de tandarts.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: She is a friend of me.

    Goed: She is a friend of mine.

    De dubbele genitief gebruikt het bezittelijk voornaamwoord: of mine.

  • Fout: We had a two-hours meeting.

    Goed: We had a two-hour meeting.

    In een samengesteld bijvoeglijk naamwoord blijft het enkelvoud.

  • Fout: The house’s roof is leaking.

    Goed: The roof of the house is leaking.

    Voor delen van dingen klinkt of meestal natuurlijker.
