De regel

Het Engels zet de ontkenning liever bij het denkwerkwoord: I don’t think it will rain is natuurlijker dan I think it won’t rain. Korte antwoorden: I don’t think so, I hope not, I’m afraid not — nooit I don’t hope so. Litotes is een Brits understatement: not bad (vrij goed), not unlike (lijkt op), not without difficulty. Dubbele ontkenningen zijn fout, en hardly, barely zijn al ontkennend — maar not un- is een bewuste, voorzichtige dubbele ontkenning.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: I can’t hardly hear you.

    Goed: I can hardly hear you.

    hardly is al ontkennend.

  • Fout: I think he won’t come.

    Goed: I don’t think he’ll come.

    Het Engels zet de ontkenning meestal bij think.

  • Fout: “Is it serious?” — “I hope no.”

    Goed: “Is it serious?” — “I hope not.”

    Het korte ontkennende antwoord is I hope not.
