القاعدة

في مستوى C1 كثير من المقارنات يصقل الوصف أو يصححه بدل ترتيب شيئين: not so much X as Y = إنه Y أكثر منه X، وmore of a … than a …، وif anything = بل ربما العكس، وfar from = بعيد كل البعد عن، وa far cry from = مختلف تمامًا عن، وevery bit as … as وno less … than = بالقدر نفسه، وno more … than = ليس أكثر مما…، وthe more …, the more … بلا قلب.

أمثلة

  1. It was not so much a holiday as a working trip.

    لم تكن عطلة بقدر ما كانت رحلة عمل.

  2. He is more of a teacher than a manager.

    إنه معلم أكثر منه مديرًا.

  3. Prices have not fallen; if anything, they have risen.

    لم تنخفض الأسعار، بل ربما ارتفعت.

  4. The sequel is every bit as good as the original.

    الجزء الثاني جيد تمامًا مثل الأصل.

أخطاء شائعة

  • خطأ: It was not so much a problem than a challenge.

    صحيح: It was not so much a problem as a challenge.

    الزوج هو not so much … as.

  • خطأ: He is more a leader than manager of.

    صحيح: He is more of a leader than a manager.

    النمط more of a … than a ….

  • خطأ: The more I practise, the better do I get.

    صحيح: The more I practise, the better I get.

    لا قلب بعد the more … the better.
