القاعدة

بعد wish وif only يدل الماضي البسيط على الحاضر (I wish I knew)، والماضي التام على الماضي، وwould على سلوك الآخر الذي تريد تغييره لا على نفسك. وبعد I’d rather مع فاعل جديد يعني الماضي تفضيلًا يخص الآن (I’d rather you didn’t smoke here)، ومع الفاعل نفسه يأتي المصدر المجرد. وIt’s high time مع الماضي تعني أنه كان يجب أن يحدث. وas if مع الماضي لتشبيه غير واقعي، وwhat if مع الماضي لاقتراح متحفظ.

wish / if only + past (now) · + past perfect (past) · + would (someone else’s habit) · I’d rather + new subject + past · it’s (high / about) time + subject + past · as if / as though + past · what if / suppose + past

أمثلة

  1. I wish I had more time to read.

    ليتني أملك وقتًا أطول للقراءة.

  2. If only we had booked a table in advance.

    ليتنا حجزنا طاولة مسبقًا.

  3. I’d rather you didn’t tell my parents just yet.

    أفضّل ألا تخبر والديّ بعد.

  4. It’s high time the council did something about the traffic.

    آن الأوان منذ زمن أن يفعل المجلس شيئًا بشأن المرور.

أخطاء شائعة

  • خطأ: I wish I know the answer.

    صحيح: I wish I knew the answer.

    التمني عن الحاضر يأخذ الماضي البسيط.

  • خطأ: I’d rather you don’t call me at work.

    صحيح: I’d rather you didn’t call me at work.

    مع فاعل جديد تأخذ I’d rather الماضي.

  • خطأ: It’s time we go home.

    صحيح: It’s time we went home.

    It’s time مع فاعل تأخذ الماضي البسيط.

  • خطأ: I wish I would be taller.

    صحيح: I wish I were taller.

    wish … would لسلوك الآخرين لا لحالك أنت.
