deze, dit, die, dat

The rule

Dutch points with four words. Near: deze with a de-word, dit with a het-word. Further away: die with a de-word, dat with a het-word. So you need to know whether the noun takes de or het — which is why this point sits next to that one.

Examples

  1. Deze bus gaat naar het centrum.

    This bus goes to the centre.

  2. Dit formulier is voor u.

    This form is for you.

  3. Die man werkt hier.

    That man works here.

  4. Dat huis is te duur.

    That house is too expensive.
