Dutch grammar

was, waren, had, hadden

A1 · Beginner Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

For zijn and hebben, Dutch usually does not use the perfect but the simple past. You say Ik was ziek rather than Ik ben ziek geweest when you are simply telling how things were. zijn becomes was (ik, hij, zij, het) and waren (wij, jullie, zij; with u usually was). hebben becomes had and hadden. These four forms turn up in almost every conversation about yesterday, so they are worth having.

Pattern

ik / hij / zij → WAS · HAD wij / jullie / zij → WAREN · HADDEN

Examples

  1. Ik was gisteren ziek.

    I was ill yesterday.

  2. Wij waren op vakantie.

    We were on holiday.

  3. Ik had geen tijd.

    I had no time.

  4. Zij hadden een afspraak.

    They had an appointment.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Wij was op vakantie.

    Right: Wij waren op vakantie.

    wij goes with waren.

  • Wrong: Ik heb geen tijd gehad gisteren.

Right: Ik had gisteren geen tijd.
