Omdat, want, dus en daarom

The rule

All four give a reason or a result, but they do different things to the word order. After omdat the verb goes to the end: "… omdat ik ziek ben." After want the clause stays normal: "… want ik ben ziek." Dus and daarom stand at the front of the second clause and put the verb straight after: "Ik ben ziek, dus ik blijf thuis" and "Ik ben ziek. Daarom blijf ik thuis."

Examples

  1. Ik kom later omdat de trein vertraging heeft.

    I am coming later because the train is delayed.

  2. Ik kom later, want de trein heeft vertraging.

    I am coming later, because the train is delayed.

  3. De trein heeft vertraging, dus ik kom later.

    The train is delayed, so I am coming later.

  4. De trein had vertraging. Daarom kwam ik te laat.

    The train was delayed. That is why I was late.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ik blijf thuis omdat ik ben ziek.

    Right: Ik blijf thuis omdat ik ziek ben.

    After omdat the verb goes to the back.

  • Wrong: Daarom ik blijf thuis.

    Right: Daarom blijf ik thuis.

    After daarom the verb comes first.
