The rule

All three have to do with time, but they do not go in the same place. Toen is for a single moment in the past: "Toen ik binnenkwam, stond zij op." Als is for the present, the future, or something that used to happen repeatedly: "Als het regent, blijf ik thuis." Wanneer is mainly a question word: "Wanneer komt u?" After toen and als the verb goes to the end of that clause, and the main clause then starts with its verb.

TOEN + verleden … , WERKWOORD + rest

Examples

  1. Toen ik in Nederland aankwam, sprak ik geen Nederlands.

    When I arrived in the Netherlands, I spoke no Dutch.

  2. Als ik tijd heb, ga ik naar het taalcafé.

    When I have time, I go to the language café.

  3. Wanneer begint de cursus precies?

    When exactly does the course start?

  4. Toen wij klein waren, gingen wij elke zomer naar zee.

    When we were small we went to the sea every summer.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Als ik gisteren thuiskwam, was het donker.

    Right: Toen ik gisteren thuiskwam, was het donker.

    One moment in the past takes toen.

  • Wrong: Toen ik tijd heb, kom ik langs.

    Right: Als ik tijd heb, kom ik langs.

    For the present you use als.
