Two pronouns together: me lo, se lo

The rule

When a sentence has both a person (indirect object) and a thing (direct object) as pronouns, the PERSON comes first: me lo, te la, nos los. Both go in front of a conjugated verb: ¿El libro? Te lo devuelvo mañana. One rule surprises everyone: le and les become se in front of lo, la, los, las. You never say le lo: ¿Las llaves? Se las he dado a Juan. Because se can mean him, her, you (usted) or them, Spanish often adds a él, a ella, a usted to make it clear.

Pattern

persona + cosa: me lo, te la, nos los · le / les + lo → se lo

Examples

  1. ¿La factura? Te la mando hoy.

    The invoice? I'll send it to you today.

  2. ¿El informe? Ya se lo he enviado al jefe.

    The report? I've already sent it to the boss.

  3. Si no entiendes la palabra, te la explico.

    If you don't understand the word, I'll explain it to you.

Keep in mind

  • Le doy el libro. / Se lo doy.

    le + lo becomes se lo — never le lo.
