que, donde, lo que: joining sentences

The rule

que is the all-purpose relative for people AND things: el chico que vive arriba, el piso que hemos visto. Do not use quien straight after a noun: el señor que me atendió. donde is for places: el pueblo donde nací. lo que means "what" in the middle of a sentence — "the thing that": no entiendo lo que dices, lo que más me gusta es…. After a preposition, put the article in: la empresa en la que trabajo, la amiga con la que vivo.

Examples

  1. El médico que me atendió fue muy amable.

    The doctor who saw me was very kind.

  2. Este es el barrio donde crecí.

    This is the neighbourhood where I grew up.

  3. No entiendo lo que dice el contrato.

    I don't understand what the contract says.

Keep in mind

  • ¿Qué quieres? / No sé lo que quieres.

    In a question: qué; inside a sentence as "the thing that": lo que.
