De regel

Het Engels bouwt lange naamwoordgroepen met een vaste volgorde: mening, grootte, leeftijd, vorm, kleur, herkomst, materiaal, doel. Zelfstandige naamwoorden kunnen andere bepalen, en het LAATSTE is de kern. Na de kern komen de nabepalingen: voorzetselgroep, betrekkelijke bijzin, deelwoordconstructie.

Patroon

determiner + opinion + size + age + shape + colour + origin + material + purpose + HEAD NOUN + prepositional phrase + relative clause

Voorbeelden

  1. A small round wooden table stood in the corner.

    Een kleine ronde houten tafel stond in de hoek.

  2. The deposit protection scheme the agency used has closed.

    De waarborgregeling die het bureau gebruikte is opgeheven.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: a leather brown old lovely bag

    Goed: a lovely old brown leather bag

    Eerst mening, dan leeftijd, dan kleur, dan materiaal.

  • Fout: a three-pages letter

    Goed: a three-page letter

    Een samengestelde bepaling vóór een zelfstandig naamwoord blijft enkelvoud.

  • Fout: The scheme protection deposit has closed.

    Goed: The deposit protection scheme has closed.

    De kern staat achteraan in een reeks zelfstandige naamwoorden.
