De regel

Als een ontkennende of beperkende uitdrukking de zin opent, keert het Engels onderwerp en hulpwerkwoord om alsof het een vraag is: Not once did they reply. No sooner had we sat down than het alarm afging. Dit is nadruk en hoort in schrijftaal en formele spraak.

Patroon

Never / Rarely / Seldom / Not once / At no time / Only when / No sooner / Hardly + auxiliary + subject + verb

Voorbeelden

  1. Never before had the service been suspended for a whole week.

    Nooit eerder was de dienst een hele week opgeschort.

  2. Not until the second letter did anybody take it seriously.

    Pas bij de tweede brief nam iemand het serieus.

  3. No sooner had we paid than the price dropped.

    Nauwelijks hadden we betaald of de prijs zakte.

  4. Only by writing again did we get an answer.

    Pas door opnieuw te schrijven kregen we antwoord.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: Never I have seen such a mess.

    Goed: Never have I seen such a mess.

    Na een ontkennende opening staat het hulpwerkwoord vóór het onderwerp.

  • Fout: No sooner we had left when it started.

    Goed: No sooner had we left than it started.

    no sooner keert om en hoort bij than, niet when.

  • Fout: Only when the survey came back we understood.

    Goed: Only when the survey came back did we understand.

    De inversie valt op de HOOFDZIN, niet op de only when-zin.
