De regel

B1 leert who, which, that en de komma. B2 voegt het voorzetsel toe. In spreektaal blijft het achteraan: the man I spoke to. In formeel schrijven gaat het naar voren en dwingt whom of which af: the man to whom I spoke. Ook hoeveelheidswoorden doen mee: two of whom, most of which.

Voorbeelden

  1. The agency to whom the complaint was sent has not replied.

    Het bureau waaraan de klacht is gestuurd heeft niet gereageerd.

  2. There were forty applicants, most of whom were local.

    Er waren veertig kandidaten, van wie de meesten uit de buurt kwamen.

  3. It is the clause on which their whole case depends.

    Het is de clausule waarop hun hele zaak berust.

  4. She sent three reports, none of which was read.

    Ze stuurde drie rapporten, waarvan er geen één is gelezen.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: The man who I spoke to him is the manager.

    Goed: The man I spoke to is the manager.

    Het betrekkelijk voornaamwoord staat al voor het voorwerp; het pronomen moet weg.

  • Fout: The report, that was late, has been rejected.

    Goed: The report, which was late, has been rejected.

    that kan niet na een komma; een uitbreidende bijzin krijgt which of who.

  • Fout: Forty applicants, most of them were local.

    Goed: Forty applicants, most of whom were local.

    Binnen een betrekkelijke bijzin krijgt het hoeveelheidswoord of whom, niet of them.
