De regel

B1 leert dat een weergegeven werkwoord één tijd terugstapt. B2 zijn de uitzonderingen, die in spraak vaker voorkomen dan de regel. U verschuift NIET als de uitspraak nog waar is, als het rapporterende werkwoord in de tegenwoordige tijd staat, of bij could, would, should, might. Plaats- en tijdswoorden verschuiven wel, en vragen verliezen hun inversie.

Voorbeelden

  1. She said the shop opens at nine, so we went early.

    Ze zei dat de winkel om negen uur opengaat, dus gingen we vroeg.

  2. He asked why the invoice had not been paid.

    Hij vroeg waarom de factuur niet betaald was.

  3. They told us they would let us know the next day.

    Ze zeiden dat ze het ons de volgende dag zouden laten weten.

  4. She said she might not be able to come.

    Ze zei dat ze misschien niet zou kunnen komen.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: He asked where was the office.

    Goed: He asked where the office was.

    Een weergegeven vraag krijgt de woordvolgorde van een mededeling.

  • Fout: She said she might could come.

    Goed: She said she might be able to come.

    Twee modale werkwoorden kunnen niet op elkaar; gebruik be able to.

  • Fout: He said the earth went round the sun.

    Goed: He said the earth goes round the sun.

    Een blijvende waarheid hoeft niet terug te schuiven.

Probeer elke vraag eerst zelf en open dan „Toon antwoord” voor de oplossing en de reden.

    Een rapporterend werkwoord in de tegenwoordige tijd veroorzaakt geen verschuiving.

    4. They said me they had already paid.

    tell krijgt een persoon; say niet.

    Een ja-of-neevraag wordt weergegeven met if of whether.

    Een dienstregeling is nog waar, dus geen verschuiving nodig.

    Toekomst in het verleden is would.

  9. 9Deze zin klopt niet. Kies de verbetering.

    Welke zin is fout?

    3. She asked me when the meeting started.
    4. She asked what time the meeting was.

    Een weergegeven vraag kan does niet behouden.
