De regel

Say en tell dragen geen houding. B2-rapportage gebruikt werkwoorden die dat wel doen, elk met een vast patroon dat u niet uit de betekenis kunt afleiden: admitted taking, refused to sign, accused him of lying, advised me to wait, insisted that we stay.

Patroon

verb + -ing (admit, deny, suggest) · verb + to (refuse, offer, threaten) · verb + object + to (advise, warn, remind) · verb + object + of + -ing (accuse) · verb + that (insist, claim)

Voorbeelden

  1. He denied having seen the email at all.

    Hij ontkende de e-mail überhaupt gezien te hebben.

  2. She offered to take the Saturday shift.

    Zij bood aan de zaterdagdienst te doen.

  3. They warned us not to sign before the survey.

    Ze waarschuwden ons niet te tekenen voor het onderzoek.

  4. He accused the agency of losing the file.

    Hij beschuldigde het bureau ervan het dossier kwijt te zijn geraakt.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: He admitted to have taken it.

    Goed: He admitted taking it.

    admit krijgt de -ing-vorm.

  • Fout: She suggested me to wait.

    Goed: She suggested that I wait.

    suggest krijgt nooit voorwerp + to; gebruik that of -ing.

  • Fout: They accused him to steal the money.

    Goed: They accused him of stealing the money.

    accuse krijgt of plus -ing.
