De regel

Modale werkwoorden dragen vaak een houding in plaats van een feit. might / could have + voltooid deelwoord is een verwijt: You might have told me! betekent: dat had je moeten doen. will en would beschrijven typisch gedrag en klagen als ze klemtoon krijgen: She will leave her shoes in the hall; He would say that, wouldn’t he?. would voor gewoonten van vroeger (alleen handelingen), Must you…? voor geïrriteerd aandringen, might as well voor een keuze bij gebrek aan beter.

might / could have + past participle (reproach) · will / would (stressed) + verb (typical, annoying) · He would say that (predictable) · would + verb (past habit) · Must you …? (irritation) · might / may as well (nothing better)

Voorbeelden

You might have warned me that the road was closed.
Je had me wel even kunnen waarschuwen dat de weg dicht was.
He will keep interrupting, however often you ask him not to.
Hij blijft maar onderbreken, hoe vaak je hem ook vraagt het niet te doen.
Every summer we would pack the car and drive to the coast.
Elke zomer pakten we de auto in en reden we naar de kust.

Veelgemaakte fouten

Fout: You might tell me yesterday!

Goed: You might have told me yesterday!

Een verwijt over het verleden vraagt might have + voltooid deelwoord.
Fout: When I was young, I would have long hair.

Goed: When I was young, I used to have long hair.

Verleden would is voor herhaalde handelingen, niet voor toestanden.
Fout: We might as well to walk.

Goed: We might as well walk.

Na might as well volgt de kale infinitief.
