De regel

C1-sprekers verzachten verzoeken, weigeringen en kritiek met een combinatie van middelen, afgestemd op de relatie. Verzoeken: verleden vormen, could, would, een ontkennende zin met bevestigende tag (You couldn’t lend me a pen, could you?), Would you mind + -ing. Voorstellen: Wouldn’t it be better to…?, It might be worth + -ing. Weigeringen: I’m afraid…, I won’t be able to…. Kritiek: bekritiseer het werk, niet de persoon, en gebruik understatement (not quite what we expected). Te veel verzachting klinkt onoprecht.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: You could lend me a pen, couldn’t you?

    Goed: You couldn’t lend me a pen, could you?

    Het voorzichtige verzoek is een ontkennende zin + bevestigende tag.

  • Fout: Your report is bad.

    Goed: The report could do with a bit more detail.

    Bekritiseer het werk, niet de persoon, en verzacht met a bit.

  • Fout: It might worth trying again.

    Goed: It might be worth trying again.

    It might be worth + -ing.
