The rule

To ask a stranger, keep Sie and put the verb first: Kommen Sie bitte herein. To ask someone you call du, drop the -st and the pronoun: Komm bitte herein. bitte is what turns an order into a request.

Pattern

Sie: Kommen Sie! · du: Komm! · ihr: Kommt!

Examples

Keep in mind

  • Sprechen Sie langsam! · Sprich langsam!

    The Sie form keeps the pronoun; the du form drops it.
