The rule

Nine Spanish verbs in ten end in -ar, and they all work the same way: take off the -ar and add -o, -as, -a, -amos, -an. Learn this once and you can conjugate hablar, trabajar, estudiar, comprar, pagar, llegar, limpiar, invitar and hundreds more you have not met yet.

Pattern

hablar → hablo · hablas · habla · hablamos · hablan

Examples

  1. Hablo un poco de español.

    I speak a little Spanish.

  2. Trabajo de lunes a viernes.

    I work from Monday to Friday.

  3. Compramos el pan en la panadería.

    We buy the bread at the bakery.

Keep in mind

  • habla

    The same form is "he speaks" and "you (usted) speak". Context decides.
