The verb tener

The rule

tener means "to have", and Spanish uses it where English uses "to be" for four everyday things: age, hunger, thirst and cold. You HAVE thirty years, you HAVE hunger. Its first person is irregular — tengo — and the e becomes ie in tienes and tiene.

Examples

  1. Tengo treinta y cuatro años.

    I am thirty-four years old.

  2. ¿Tienes hermanos?

    Do you have brothers or sisters?

  3. Tengo hambre. ¿Comemos?

    I am hungry. Shall we eat?

  • tener que + infinitivo

    Tengo que trabajar = I have to work.
