The rule

Spanish numbers are three rules, not a hundred words. 0–15 are learned whole. 16–29 are written as ONE word: dieciséis, diecisiete, veintiuno, veintidós. From 31 on they are THREE words joined by y: treinta y uno, cuarenta y dos. uno shortens to un before a masculine noun and becomes una before a feminine one: un café, una mesa, veintiún euros.

  1. Tengo treinta y cuatro años.

    I am thirty-four.

  2. Son doce euros con cincuenta.

    That is twelve euros fifty.

  3. Cien gramos de queso.

    A hundred grams of cheese.

Keep in mind

  • cien / ciento

    Exactly 100 is cien; 101 to 199 use ciento: ciento veinte.
