Telling a story: the two pasts together
The rule
A1 taught the indefinido and the imperfecto one at a time. In a story they work together and do different jobs. The IMPERFECTO paints the background — what the scene was like, what was going on, the time, the weather, how people felt: era tarde, llovía, estaba cansado. The INDEFINIDO moves the story forward — the events, one after another: llegué, abrí la puerta, vi a mi vecino. Ask of each verb: is this something that HAPPENED (indefinido), or a description of the situation around it (imperfecto)? An event that cuts into a background is also indefinido: cuando salía de casa, empezó a llover. And for childhood or an earlier stage of life, cuando era niño opens the background.
fondo: era, estaba, había, llovía · hechos: llegué, vi, empezó

Keep in mind
Ayer llovía cuando salí. / Ayer llovió todo el día.
llovía is the weather behind another event; llovió reports the rain itself as a finished fact.
