De regel

Focusbijwoorden als only, even, just en also hechten zich aan het deel waarop ze de nadruk leggen, dus verplaatsen verandert de betekenis: Only I saw the email (niemand anders), I only saw the email (verder niets mee gedaan), I saw only the email (niet de bijlage). Middenbijwoorden (also, just, already, still, probably) staan na be en na het eerste hulpwerkwoord, maar vóór een hoofdwerkwoord. Commentaarbijwoorden (Frankly, Surprisingly) openen meestal de zin.

Only I … (nobody else) · I only … (nothing more) · … only the … (nothing else) · Even + subject · even + verb · be + also / still / probably · auxiliary + also / just / already + main verb · Frankly, / Surprisingly, / Clearly, + sentence

Voorbeelden

  1. Only the manager can approve the refund.

    Alleen de manager kan de terugbetaling goedkeuren.

  2. The manager can only approve the refund, not pay it.

    De manager kan de terugbetaling alleen goedkeuren, niet uitbetalen.

  3. Even the children noticed that something was wrong.

    Zelfs de kinderen merkten dat er iets mis was.

    Eerlijk gezegd denk ik niet dat het plan zal werken.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: She also is a qualified pilot.

    Goed: She is also a qualified pilot.

    also staat na be, maar vóór een hoofdwerkwoord.

  • Fout: I have seen already that film.

    Goed: I have already seen that film.

    Middenbijwoorden staan tussen hulpwerkwoord en hoofdwerkwoord.

  • Fout: He speaks very well English.

    Goed: He speaks English very well.

    Zet geen bijwoord tussen een werkwoord en zijn voorwerp.
