De regel

Het loze there doet veel meer dan there is / are. Het combineert met seem, appear en happen (There appears to have been a mistake), met be likely / bound to, met modale werkwoorden (There must be a way) en met rapporterende passieven (There is said to be…). Vaste uitdrukkingen: There is no denying that…, There is no telling…, There’s no point -ing, There’s no need to…. Formeel: There being no further business, …. Het werkwoord congrueert met het zelfstandig naamwoord erna; de tag herhaalt there.

    Om iets te introduceren dat bestaat, gebruik je there, niet it.

    Goed: There seem to be several mistakes.

    Het werkwoord congrueert met het zelfstandig naamwoord erna.

  • Fout: There is no point to argue.

    Goed: There is no point arguing.

    no point (in) + -ing.
