De regel

Gepaarde voegwoorden (both … and, either … or, neither … nor, not only … but also, whether … or) verbinden twee elementen die grammaticaal gelijk moeten zijn: zelfstandig naamwoord met zelfstandig naamwoord, werkwoord met werkwoord. She not only speaks French but also Spanish is scheef; goed is She speaks not only French but also Spanish. Bij either … or en neither … nor congrueert het werkwoord met het dichtstbijzijnde onderwerp. not … but corrigeert; rather than verbindt gelijke vormen.
