The verb gustar

The rule

gustar runs backwards from English. It does not mean "to like" but "to be pleasing", so the thing you like is the SUBJECT and you are the one it happens to: me gusta el café is literally "coffee pleases me". Two consequences a beginner must get right: the verb agrees with the THING, so it is me gustan los libros for more than one, and the person changes at the front — me, te, le, nos, les.

  3. ¿Te gusta la música española?

  • No me gusta el pescado.

    The no goes at the very front.
