The verb ir

The rule

ir is completely irregular — voy, vas, va, vamos, van — and it does two jobs. With a and a place it means "go there": voy al mercado. With a and another verb it is how Spanish talks about the future at this level: voy a llamar al médico. Remember that a + el always joins into al.

voy a + lugar · voy a + infinitivo

Examples

  1. Voy al mercado los sábados.

    I go to the market on Saturdays.

  2. Mañana voy a ir al médico.

    Tomorrow I am going to go to the doctor.

  3. ¿Adónde vas?

    Where are you going?

Keep in mind

  • a + el = al

    Never "a el": voy al centro, vengo del trabajo.
