The conditional: advice and wishes
The rule
The conditional is built like the future — the whole infinitive, or the same shortened stem — with the endings -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían: hablaría, tendría, podría, haría. At A2 it does three jobs. ADVICE: deberías descansar, yo que tú, iría al médico. WISHES: me encantaría vivir cerca del mar. POLITENESS: ¿podría ayudarme?, ¿le importaría esperar un momento?. Do not confuse it with the imperfect: comería (would eat) and comía (used to eat) differ by one syllable.
infinitivo + ía, ías, ía, íamos, ían · tendría, podría, haría, diría
Examples
Deberías dormir más, tienes mala cara.
You should sleep more, you look tired.
Yo que tú, hablaría con el casero.
If I were you, I would talk to the landlord.
Me encantaría visitar Granada algún día.
I would love to visit Granada some day.
Keep in mind
Comía mucho. / Comería mucho.
comía: used to eat (imperfect); comería: would eat (conditional) — the -r- is the difference.
