Spanish grammar

The simple past: pidió, durmió, leyó

A2 · Elementary Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

Two groups of verbs change only in the THIRD persons of the indefinido. The -ir verbs that change e→i or e→ie in the present — pedir, repetir, servir, seguir, sentir, preferir, vestirse — show a small e→i in él and ellos only: pidió, pidieron, sintió, prefirieron. dormir and morir change o→u in the same two places: durmió, murieron. Everything else stays regular: pedí, dormimos. And when the stem ends in a vowel — leer, oír, caer, creer, construir — the i between two vowels is written y: leyó, oyeron, se cayó, construyeron.

Pattern

pedir → pidió, pidieron · dormir → durmió, durmieron · leer → leyó, leyeron
