Spanish grammar

The future tense

A2 · Elementary Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

Spanish has a one-word future, and it is easy: take the WHOLE infinitive and add -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -án — the same endings for every verb: hablaré, comerás, vivirá. A dozen common verbs shorten the infinitive but keep the endings: tener → tendré, salir → saldré, venir → vendré, poner → pondré, poder → podré, saber → sabré, querer → querré, hacer → haré, decir → diré, haber → habrá. Use it for predictions and promises — mañana lloverá, te llamaré — and in announcements. For your own plans in conversation, ir a (A1) is still the more common choice.

Pattern

infinitivo + é, ás, á, emos, án · tendré, saldré, vendré, haré, diré, podré

Examples

  1. Mañana hará sol en todo el país.

Tomorrow it will be sunny all over the country.

  2. Te llamaré esta noche, te lo prometo.

I'll call you tonight, I promise.

  3. El año que viene tendremos más tiempo.

Next year we will have more time.

Keep in mind

  • Voy a comprar pan. / Compraré pan.

Both are the future: ir a is the everyday plan; the one-word future sounds more like a promise or a prediction.
