Zorg Spaceestaba + gerund: what was going on
The rule
estaba + gerund is the past of estoy trabajando: an action in progress at a moment in the past. Its natural partner is an event in the indefinido that cuts in: estaba cocinando cuando llamaste. Often estaba hablando and hablaba are both possible; the gerund puts the camera inside the action. For a stretch of time that is CLOSED — with toda la tarde, dos horas, hasta las ocho — use the indefinido of estar: estuve trabajando toda la tarde.

Estaba trabajando cuando llegaste. / Estuve trabajando hasta las ocho.
estaba: in the middle of it when something happened; estuve: a closed stretch with a limit.
