The rule

A group of very common verbs changes its stem vowel when the stress falls on it: e becomes ie, o becomes ue. querer → quiero, poder → puedo, empezar → empieza, volver → vuelve, dormir → duermo, costar → cuesta. The change does NOT happen in nosotros, because the stress moves off the stem: queremos, podemos. The endings are completely regular; only the vowel moves.

querer → quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, quieren

Examples

  1. Quiero un café, por favor.

    I would like a coffee, please.

  2. La película empieza a las nueve.

    The film starts at nine.

  3. Los zapatos cuestan cuarenta euros.

    The shoes cost forty euros.

    No change: the stress has moved to the ending.
