The imperfect: era, tenía, había

The rule

At A1 you need the imperfect for two jobs only: DESCRIBING how things used to be, and saying what you USED TO do. Antes vivía en el centro, de pequeño no me gustaba el pescado, la casa era muy grande. The endings are easy: -ar takes -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -aban; -er and -ir take -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían. Only three verbs are irregular: ser → era, ir → iba, ver → veía. Do not use it to report a single finished event — that is what the indefinido is for.

Pattern

hablaba, comía, vivía · ser → era · ir → iba · ver → veía

Examples

  1. Antes vivía en el centro, ahora vivo aquí.

    I used to live in the centre, now I live here.

  2. De pequeño no me gustaba el pescado.

    As a child I did not like fish.

  3. Mi abuelo era agricultor.

    My grandfather was a farmer.
