Perfect or simple past?

The rule

In Spain the TIME MARKER decides, and this is the rule worth memorising. An open period — hoy, esta mañana, esta semana, este mes, este año, ya, todavía no, alguna vez, nunca — takes he comido. A closed one — ayer, anoche, el lunes, la semana pasada, hace dos años, en 2019 — takes comí. Note honestly that in most of Latin America comí is used for both, and nobody will misunderstand you; but inside this course, follow the marker.

Pattern

hoy / esta semana / ya / todavía no → he comido · ayer / el lunes / hace dos años → comí

Examples

  1. Hoy he desayunado en casa.

    Today I have had breakfast at home.

  2. Ayer desayuné en la cafetería.

    Yesterday I had breakfast in the café.

  3. Ayer fui al médico y hoy me he encontrado mejor.

    Yesterday I went to the doctor and today I have felt better.

Keep in mind

  • Ayer he ido al médico.

    Wrong in Spain: ayer is closed, so it must be "ayer fui".
