ir a + infinitive

The rule

The way Spanish actually talks about the future in conversation. Conjugate ir — voy, vas, va, vamos, van — add a, then an infinitive: voy a llamar, vamos a comer, van a venir. The a is obligatory; leaving it out is the commonest mistake. For a plan with a time expression the plain present also works: mañana trabajo.

Pattern

voy / vas / va / vamos / van + a + infinitivo

Examples

  1. Mañana voy a llamar al médico.

    Tomorrow I am going to call the doctor.

  2. El verano que viene vamos a ir a la costa.

    Next summer we are going to go to the coast.

  3. ¿Qué vas a hacer el fin de semana?

    What are you going to do at the weekend?

Keep in mind

  • Voy a comer. / Voy comer.

    The second is wrong — the a is not optional.
