The rule

A short closed list you simply have to know, because they are the most frequent verbs in the language: hacer → hecho, decir → dicho, ver → visto, poner → puesto, escribir → escrito, volver → vuelto, abrir → abierto, romper → roto, morir → muerto. Verbs built on them follow: devolver → devuelto, describir → descrito. Everything else is regular.

Pattern

hacer → hecho · decir → dicho · ver → visto · poner → puesto · abrir → abierto

Examples

  1. ¿Qué has hecho esta mañana?

    What have you done this morning?

  2. He roto un vaso sin querer.

    I have broken a glass by accident.

  3. No me ha dicho nada todavía.

    He has not told me anything yet.

Keep in mind

  • He escrito el correo.

    Not "escribido" — escribir is on the list.
