The simple past — regular verbs

The rule

The tense for something finished and closed off from now: yesterday, last week, in 2019, three years ago. -ar verbs take -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -aron; -er and -ir verbs share one set: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -ieron. Watch the accents — hablo is "I speak" and habló is "he spoke", and the only difference is the mark.

Examples

  1. Ayer hablé con el propietario.

    Yesterday I spoke to the landlord.

  2. Nací en Sevilla en mil novecientos noventa.

    I was born in Seville in nineteen ninety.

  3. El año pasado vivimos en Valencia.

    Last year we lived in Valencia.

  • Hablo / Habló

    Without the accent it is the present "I speak"; with it, "he spoke".
