The simple past — irregular verbs

The rule

The commonest verbs are irregular, and they share a pattern worth seeing: a changed stem plus the endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron — with NO accent on the yo and él forms. tener → tuve, estar → estuve, hacer → hice, decir → dije, venir → vine, poder → pude, poner → puse, querer → quise, saber → supe. ser and ir are the same word in this tense: fui, fuiste, fue — context tells you which.

Examples

  1. Ayer tuve que ir al médico.

    Yesterday I had to go to the doctor.

  2. La semana pasada estuve en Madrid.

    Last week I was in Madrid.

  3. Fue una etapa difícil.

    It was a difficult period.

Keep in mind

  • Fui al médico. / Fui enfermera.

    The first is ir, the second is ser. Same form, different verb.
